Background, publications, speaking engagements and bar association service of Alan N. Walter, an attorney focused on AI governance and business law.
Bio
Alan N. Walter is the founder and principal of Alan N. Walter, Counsel in Montclair, New Jersey. He represents innovators, start-ups and growing businesses as outside general counsel, and is licensed to practice in New Jersey and New York.
His practice centers on the legal questions raised by artificial intelligence: governance and use policies, vendor and model contracting, training data and intellectual property diligence, the accuracy of AI claims made to investors and customers, and compliance with emerging state regulation. That work sits alongside the corporate, securities and technology transactions practice he has maintained for decades, covering entity formation, financing, commercial contracts, and mergers and acquisitions.
Before founding the firm he was the first general counsel at entrepreneurial firms, practiced in Big Law and served as in-house counsel at a Fortune 500 company.
He chairs the Venture Capital, Emerging Growth Technology Companies and Angel Investors Committee of the New Jersey State Bar Association Business Law Section, and serves on the association’s Artificial Intelligence Committee. He is a graduate of Harvard College and New York University School of Law, and holds a FINRA Series 65 license.
Walter writes frequently about law and technology for both lawyers and general audiences. His work has appeared in Slate, Law360, New Jersey Lawyer and ABA Deal Points, and he writes regularly, sometimes humorously, on this website.
He was named a Leader in Law by NJBIZ, New Jersey’s leading business journal, in 2023 and 2026. Selection methodology and required disclosure.
